Tarmac Repairs and Patching

Tarmac Repairs and Patching in North Yorkshire

We repair potholes, cracking, sunken areas and damaged tarmac surfaces across North Yorkshire for homeowners, businesses, landlords and landowners. We diagnose the underlying cause before patching, so the repair actually lasts.

What We Do

A pothole is almost always a symptom of a deeper problem. Water has got in somewhere, the sub-base has weakened, and the surface above has failed. If you patch the hole without addressing how the water is getting in, the repair will fail again within a year or two. We take the time to look at why the failure happened, and fix the cause as well as the symptom.

  • Cause of failure diagnosed before any patching work begins
  • Saw-cut clean edges so the repair bonds properly to the existing surface
  • Sub-base rebuilt where the underlying structure has failed
  • Drainage and water-ingress issues addressed as part of the repair
  • Honest advice on patch vs. overlay vs. full resurface
  • Before-and-after photos available for insurance and maintenance records

Our Process

How a typical job runs from first contact to finished surface.

  1. Site visit and diagnosis

We come and look at the damage, work out what has caused it, and put together a written quote that covers the actual repair you need, not the cheapest fix that will fail again.

  2. Cut out the failed area

We saw-cut the failed area to clean square edges. This gives the new patch something solid to bond to and stops the failure spreading sideways.

  3. Investigate the sub-base

We look at what is underneath the failed area. If the sub-base is sound, we proceed straight to repair. If the sub-base has failed, we excavate further and rebuild it properly.

  4. Treat the cause

If water ingress is the cause, such as a blocked drain, a failed seal or a missing edge restraint, we deal with that as part of the repair. Otherwise the repair will fail again.

  5. Lay and compact the patch

We tack-coat the edges of the cut, lay new binder and surface course material, and compact it properly. The patch is set very slightly proud of the surrounding surface so that it sits flush after final compaction under traffic.

  6. Clean down and handover

We clean the area, remove waste, and walk you through what we have done. We can also provide before-and-after photos for insurance or maintenance records.

Materials and Options

For small-scale repairs such as a single pothole or a cracked area a few square metres in size, patch repair is usually the right answer. It is fast, economical, and if done properly will last for years.

For larger areas of failure, or for surfaces where the failures are widespread, an overlay or full resurface is more cost-effective in the long run. Patching a surface that is generally failing is throwing good money after bad. We will give you an honest assessment.

Looking After Your Surface

Once a repair has been done, the rest of the surface still needs looking after. Sweep regularly, deal with new cracks before they spread, and keep drainage features clear. Catching small problems early is much cheaper than letting them grow into bigger ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are pothole repairs a permanent fix?

A properly done pothole repair will last years if the underlying problem is addressed. The most common reason a repair fails quickly is that water is getting in from the side or from below. Fix the cause, not just the symptom, and the repair will hold. We diagnose before we patch.

Can you repair just the damaged area, or do we need to resurface?

It depends on the extent of the failure. If the surface has localised damage but the underlying structure is sound, a patch repair is the right answer. If failures are widespread, the whole area is sunken, or water is pooling, a resurface is more cost-effective in the long run. We will give you an honest assessment.

How quickly can you respond to an urgent repair?

Urgent repairs, particularly trip hazards, deep potholes or anything affecting access, can usually be visited and quoted quickly. The actual repair date depends on workload and material availability. Call us and we will tell you honestly when we can be on site.

Can you match the repair to the existing surface?

We aim to match colour and texture as closely as possible, but new tarmac will always look different to weathered tarmac for the first few months. Over time it weathers in. If a perfect cosmetic match matters, a larger overlay may be the better option.

Do you handle insurance or claim work?

Yes. We can provide written quotes, before-and-after photos and any documentation needed for insurance claims, landlord communications or maintenance records.
