Roads and Pathways

Roads and Pathways in North Yorkshire

We surface private roads, access tracks, estate roads, footpaths and shared driveways across North Yorkshire. We work for landowners, developers, housing associations, businesses and rural property owners. We build surfaces that are properly specified for the loading and the conditions.

What We Do

Private roads and access tracks are some of the most varied work we do. A surface that is right for an estate road in a new housing development is completely wrong for a long farm track that has to take agricultural vehicles. We assess each job on its own terms and spec the build-up to suit how the surface will actually be used.

  • Surface specified for the actual loading the route will carry
  • Drainage planning and gulley installation included where needed
  • Edge restraint installed to prevent surface failure at the edges
  • Longer rural drives assessed in full with no one-size-fits-all spec
  • Suitable for residential, agricultural or commercial vehicle traffic
  • Compatible with developer adoption standards for new estate roads

Our Process

How a typical job runs from first contact to finished surface.

  1. Site assessment

We walk the full route, look at ground conditions, check drainage, measure gradients and discuss expected loading. For longer routes we look at how conditions change along the length and plan the build-up accordingly.

  2. Specification and quote

We put together a written, itemised quote that covers preparation, sub-base, surface specification, drainage and edging. For larger jobs we can phase the work and price it in stages.

  3. Preparation and sub-base

We excavate to the required depth, treat soft spots, and lay a properly compacted sub-base sized for the actual loading the surface will need to carry.

  4. Drainage and edging

We plan and install drainage, including gulleys, channels, soakaways or french drains as needed, and install edge restraint to stop the surface failing at the edges.

  5. Surface installation

We lay binder and surface courses to the specified thickness, compacted hot. For heavily loaded sites we can lay a thicker build-up; for light-use footpaths we use a lighter spec.

  6. Site clearance and handover

We clear the site, remove waste, and provide any documentation needed for landlords, developers, or planning records.

Materials and Options

The right surface for a private road depends entirely on what is going to drive on it. A residential cul-de-sac with cars and the occasional delivery van needs a moderate build-up. An access road to a working farm needs significantly more. An estate road in a new development needs to meet adoption standards if the council will eventually take it over.

For footpaths and pedestrian areas, we use a lighter specification with a finer surface course. For shared driveways serving multiple properties, the build-up needs to handle the combined traffic.

Looking After Your Surface

Private roads and access tracks need regular inspection, particularly after winter when freeze-thaw can cause cracking and edge damage. Catching damage early and dealing with it before water penetrates extends the life of the surface significantly.

Drainage features need to be kept clear. A blocked gulley or silted-up channel will cause water to pond, and ponding water is the single biggest cause of premature failure on any tarmac surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of roads and pathways do you cover?

Private roads, estate roads, access tracks, footpaths, cycle paths and shared driveways. We work for private landowners, developers, housing associations, businesses and rural property owners.

Can the surface take heavy vehicles?

Yes, but the surface needs to be specified for the actual loading. A tarmac surface built for residential cars will fail under regular agricultural or commercial vehicle traffic. We will spec the build-up to suit how the surface will actually be used.

Do you handle drainage as part of the job?

Drainage is part of getting any surface right. Standing water is the single biggest cause of premature failure on tarmac surfaces, so we plan drainage and falls properly as part of every job. We can install gulleys, channels and soakaways where needed.

Can you work on long rural access tracks?

Yes. We have experience with longer rural drives and access tracks where ground conditions, gradients and drainage all change along the route. We assess the full route and build up the surface accordingly.

Do you work with developers on new-build sites?

Yes. We work with developers and contractors on new-build access roads and estate roads, and can work to engineering specifications and site programmes.
